Bibi, Mubarak and Iran

The same Benjamin Netanyahu we know really well met the Egyptian President who knows him really well tonight. So what’s new? Nothing of course. The show is on, the same old show. Netanyahu said in Cairo that he wants to resume peace talks with Palestinians as soon as possible.
One should ask himself a very important question: why did Bibi go to see Mubarak as a prep to his meeting with Obama? People would say because Egypt is a major player in the region and it’s wise to go and see what the Egyptians are expecting from Israel now. But is that like the Bibi we know?

If there is one thing about Bibi that everyone knows, it is that he is not in for resolving the Palestinian dilemma peacefully. Yes, he will resume peace talks with the Palestinians but only to keep them going. Remember who launched the most recent pretext for not abiding by the two states solution? Bibi himself. He wants to tie ending Iran’s nuclear program with Israel’s admission of the Palestinians’ right to a de-weaponized state of their own. So if the Iranian issue is not resolved, the Palestinian one will remain open.

Now, how does that play in the interest of Bibi’s strategy? The Israeli prime minister went to Egypt to discuss three things according to Haaretz newspaper: the Palestinian issue, the Iranian nuclear program and the Hezbollah cell recently captured in Egypt. We all know of the deep rift if not animosity between the Egyptian regime and the Iranian one. Well, it has intensified after Cairo’s declaration of capturing Hezbollah’s cell. There is no doubt that Bibi is trying to capitalize on this recent issue as it serves well his ends to destitutely prolong any round of peace talks Obama might pressure him to initiate.

Bibi wants to win Cairo and the rest of the so called moderate Arab states on his side against Tehran, so that Iran becomes the one and only danger everyone in the region is preoccupied with instead of making his administration swallow the bitter cup that would shatter it to pieces, which is making peace.

This really depends on how Cairo weighs its strategic interests. Which is more important to Egypt? Pursuing its animosity with Iran or pressing the Israelis to make real peace with the Palestinians at a time when everyone says that Obama is committed to pressurize his Isreali allies.

Yes I Obama bowed

I have to admit, being the President of the United States of America is harder than ever when you happen to be a black brother with a Muslim father. Just the other day at the G20 summit I ran into the old king Abdulla Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and out of respect for this leader more than twice as old as I am, I tried to be more friendly to the monarch of the biggest producer of oil and shock hand with a revering bow. Minutes later, the Internet was swarming with irrational commentary about me lying about my true religion and sucking up to the fundamentalist Muslims. I would never imagine the same reaction if I had done the same with Israel's president Shimon Peres. How very degenerate of us Westerners to judge people on their backgrounds rather than what they are.

Now, I would like to say one more thing, Arab monarchs are not normally greeted by their subjects with a bow. Traditionally, they are either kissed on the nose or the shoulder and rarely on the right hand. So the bow dose not mean anything in this situation other than respect and appreciation. I have clearly invented the move out of respect and appreciation. The Saudi monarch is a very valuable ally when it comes to combating the financial crisis and terrorism as well as making peace in the middle east. We all appreciate his peace initiative although we are not yet adopting it. I will not be bothered the least with people trying to twist everything I do just for the fun of it.

I have greater things to attend to. The world's economy, security and peace needs all my energy now more than ever. North Korea is trying our patience and if we appear paralysed, soon Iran will follow. And who will stick with us in this dilemma? Our allies. We have to mend all the wrong things of the past, put down our arrogance aside and see the world as it is, and if that means changing the way we treat our allies to one of respect, so be it.

Analyses: Israel Failed to Cash on Palestinian Blood

On the aftermath of its 22 days of Nazi-like rampage in Gaza killing more than 1200 and wounding more than 5000 people most of them children and women, Israel announced a unilateral ceasefire saying that it was satisfied by a US agreement it had signed to halt arms smuggling to Hamas, thus claiming victory and achieving its Cast Lead operation objectives.
Notice anything wrong with this narrative? First of all, a simple question arises: Why on earth did Israel wage this mad genocide if it only needed an agreement from a more than compassionately willing ally such as Bush’s administration to achieve this outcome? Simple answer: Israel is lying.
The real reason behind this first of its kind unilateral ceasefire in the history of Arab-Israeli wars is that Tel Aviv categorically failed to achieve any outcome except on the side of randomly killing Palestinians.

The self defined objectives of the infamous operation Cast Lead were to better the security of the southern area against Hamas’s rockets, create a new reality in the Gaza strip and stop Hamas form smuggling arms into Gaza. Though extremely general and vague, these loose objectives were not achieved. One other hidden objective which is to repair the image of Israel’s vicious deterrent striking force through terror had also faded as the population of Gaza - no matter how bereaved- were able to stand deeply rooted to their land as opposed to previous times in history.

The war on Gaza was the most viciously sadistic attack by Israelis against Palestinians so far, with fire power beyond imagination even from Israeli veteran commentators themselves, yet for the staggering high number of Palestinians killed and the shear magnitude of destruction inflicted; the outcome is unbelievably disproportionate, more even than that of the power scale between Israel and Hamas.

One could argue that Hamas was dealt a surprising and harsh blow by Israel, but this dose not mount to “creating a new reality in Gaza” unless the real meaning of this is tied to the inhumanely unnecessary genocide.

The reality is still as follows: Hamas is still in control in Gaza, able to strike with rockets to places further than the areas Israel wanted to secure and it did already hours after Israel’s ceasefire. The tunnels are still there and Israel’s Shin Bit says Hamas will rebuild new ones. So the situation is rather back to square one except for one reality that has emerged from the wrath: The resistance option has gained far more validity and support amongst Arabs and Muslims after Hamas has followed suit of the Lebanese Hezbulla in preventing Israel from inflicting terror on the Arab and Muslim psyche.

One can only anticipate a new round as the two parties take a necessary recess for different reasons.

Rice:"it's hard" for Israelis to shield Gaza civilians

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Friday "it's hard" for Israeli troops to shield civilians in Gaza because the area is so densely populated and Hamas uses people as human shields. This comes only hours after a UN agency has said Israeli troops evacuated Palestinian civilians to a house in Gaza City, then shelled the building 24 hours later.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs dated the incident to Jan. 4, a day after Israel began its ground offensive against the people of Gaza. Based on an eyewitness testimony, the account added details to an incident previously reported by The Associated Press and an Israeli human rights group. The UN agency said 110 people were in the house and 30 people were killed, far higher figures than in other accounts. It said a Red Cross medical team was blocked from reaching the area until three days later. Rescuers were allowed in on foot, without ambulances.

It’s not at all strange to hear this form an official whose administration is waging wars all over the planet. It seems that Rice is making the grounds for more atrocities to come by Israel. After more than two weeks of indiscriminate bombardment of almost everything that moves in Gaza, the Israeli army appears unable to allege any military accomplishment aside from killing hundreds of Palestinian civilians. This tactic of cold bloodedly targeting Palestinian civilians is obviously aimed at inflicting unbearable pain on the Palestinian population to get them to revolt against Hamas.

So Rice thinks by saying that she is giving the Israelis the time and justification to continue using this inhumane tactic for political ends. In other words Rice and Israel think they can cheat the people they are killing and whole world into thinking that Hamas is to blame for all these daily killings. What a great plan to win the war is that?
