Bibi, Mubarak and Iran

The same Benjamin Netanyahu we know really well met the Egyptian President who knows him really well tonight. So what’s new? Nothing of course. The show is on, the same old show. Netanyahu said in Cairo that he wants to resume peace talks with Palestinians as soon as possible.
One should ask himself a very important question: why did Bibi go to see Mubarak as a prep to his meeting with Obama? People would say because Egypt is a major player in the region and it’s wise to go and see what the Egyptians are expecting from Israel now. But is that like the Bibi we know?

If there is one thing about Bibi that everyone knows, it is that he is not in for resolving the Palestinian dilemma peacefully. Yes, he will resume peace talks with the Palestinians but only to keep them going. Remember who launched the most recent pretext for not abiding by the two states solution? Bibi himself. He wants to tie ending Iran’s nuclear program with Israel’s admission of the Palestinians’ right to a de-weaponized state of their own. So if the Iranian issue is not resolved, the Palestinian one will remain open.

Now, how does that play in the interest of Bibi’s strategy? The Israeli prime minister went to Egypt to discuss three things according to Haaretz newspaper: the Palestinian issue, the Iranian nuclear program and the Hezbollah cell recently captured in Egypt. We all know of the deep rift if not animosity between the Egyptian regime and the Iranian one. Well, it has intensified after Cairo’s declaration of capturing Hezbollah’s cell. There is no doubt that Bibi is trying to capitalize on this recent issue as it serves well his ends to destitutely prolong any round of peace talks Obama might pressure him to initiate.

Bibi wants to win Cairo and the rest of the so called moderate Arab states on his side against Tehran, so that Iran becomes the one and only danger everyone in the region is preoccupied with instead of making his administration swallow the bitter cup that would shatter it to pieces, which is making peace.

This really depends on how Cairo weighs its strategic interests. Which is more important to Egypt? Pursuing its animosity with Iran or pressing the Israelis to make real peace with the Palestinians at a time when everyone says that Obama is committed to pressurize his Isreali allies.

Yes I Obama bowed

I have to admit, being the President of the United States of America is harder than ever when you happen to be a black brother with a Muslim father. Just the other day at the G20 summit I ran into the old king Abdulla Al Saud of Saudi Arabia and out of respect for this leader more than twice as old as I am, I tried to be more friendly to the monarch of the biggest producer of oil and shock hand with a revering bow. Minutes later, the Internet was swarming with irrational commentary about me lying about my true religion and sucking up to the fundamentalist Muslims. I would never imagine the same reaction if I had done the same with Israel's president Shimon Peres. How very degenerate of us Westerners to judge people on their backgrounds rather than what they are.

Now, I would like to say one more thing, Arab monarchs are not normally greeted by their subjects with a bow. Traditionally, they are either kissed on the nose or the shoulder and rarely on the right hand. So the bow dose not mean anything in this situation other than respect and appreciation. I have clearly invented the move out of respect and appreciation. The Saudi monarch is a very valuable ally when it comes to combating the financial crisis and terrorism as well as making peace in the middle east. We all appreciate his peace initiative although we are not yet adopting it. I will not be bothered the least with people trying to twist everything I do just for the fun of it.

I have greater things to attend to. The world's economy, security and peace needs all my energy now more than ever. North Korea is trying our patience and if we appear paralysed, soon Iran will follow. And who will stick with us in this dilemma? Our allies. We have to mend all the wrong things of the past, put down our arrogance aside and see the world as it is, and if that means changing the way we treat our allies to one of respect, so be it.

Things Are Piling

Well, it has been some time since I announced the appointment of George Mitchell a special envoy for the Middle East and held my first televised interview with the Alarabiya TV channel to communicate directly with the Arab public. Mitchell visited the region from tip to toe talking to and hearing from everyone and this is a good thing. It’s true he did not talk to Hamas who is a major player on the ground and it will not be possible to bring tangible progress without their help but it is better to put that off to an appropriate time. We don’t want to embarrass our Israeli allies a few days after the war which did not result in anything decisive and only days before their elections. I do not hide my concern. Today, the Israeli elections resulted in the victory of Netanyahu, Livni and Lieberman which would not greatly help in directing things towards the targets I’ve announced. But on the other hand, what could I have hoped for? In the end these are the politicians of Israel!

Israel is the only democracy in a region swarming with dictatorships of which the Arab states are the worst. There is no free press and no parliaments and the only firm Arab parliament is in Lebanon. In Lebanon, Hezbollah and its allies dominate the scene and I expect them to achieve a sweeping victory in the forthcoming elections. It will not be a good thing of course, but this is the case in the Middle East. There will be many problems and provocations and with the control of the right in of Israel, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon; no one would be able to anticipate how and where things could go wrong.

In spite of my conviction that things could get better if we open channels to talk with the Iranians, I can not determine the efficacy of this in terms of defusing the escalating crisis in this strange region. Everything there is complicated and I don’t trust the ability of my advisers to pursue the details. If we engaged with Iran, everyone would think we are weak, our Arab allies will not trust us not to speak of the Israelis and the Iranian mullahs will be in a position to seek recognition as a regional power in this sensitive and fragile area. And if we refrained from doing so, there will be inevitable confrontation with a country twice as big as Iraq and this is something terrible. Talking to them is inevitable to try to delay their nuclear program even though for some time. All we can do now is buy time; perhaps a change would come forth in this dismal scene.

The economic crisis is closing in on us at home and the republicans are questioning my leadership, was this not fully anticipated? I feel that there are people who have not yet accepted the fact that I, a black man was elected. When the issue of the withdrawal of Tom Daschle and Nancy Cleaver occurred because of their unfortunate tax problems, some people jumped to turn it into a nightmare. I acknowledged my mistake and apologized, I think that this ends the matter. But I must ask myself why all these advisers around me have lead me to this horrible failure.

Good, I will put all of this behind my back now, I must devote myself to develop an effective framework to address the economic crisis, or there would be no America after today. It’s more serious than I actually thought it was. Everything is entangled with everything, our strength at home is what makes us the world's superpower and our influence in the world supports and feeds this power.

Black President’s Days in The White House

Barack Hussein Obama took the presidency oath tonight in Washington DC, to be legally inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States of America after the world held its breath during the presidential campaign only to breathe a sigh of relief over the announcement of elections’ results last November. Perhaps this is the happiest occasion in the life of Obama - at least so far - who became both envied and unenvied by many. I have followed your inauguration ceremony and was affected by your overwhelming happiness. It was a historic day, no doubt about that.

Finally, Obama you have become the most powerful man in the world. Because this is a happy occasion, or so perceived, I decided to send you some present, but what can you give to the President of the United States and perhaps the president of the world as some would like to call you for different purposes?

Truth is, this question does not fit well with my financial resources, and therefore decided not to indulge in a failed attempt to answer it as it should be. I have an idea: I will make you my imaginary friend, Obama for the duration of your presidency and you may seek my opinion on whatever world affairs you wish. I’ve also decided to write your diary as you are my imaginary friend. As the Arab tradition says that a gift cannot be turned down or sold; it’s done with. I will call it Black President’s Days in The White House.
